The Tiny Seed

Our Talk for Writing book this half term was “The Tiny Seed” by Eric Carle. The children enjoyed listening to the story and learning about seeds and plants. As part of our learning, we made our own compost and children were very busy collecting fruit and vegetable peelings, grass, leaves and even hair from a haircut from home to add to our compost bottles! We were all excited to see the compost form and enjoyed a visit from the Eco Warrier team who helped us dig in the compost and plant some lettuces in our nursery garden.

We enjoyed looking for signs of spring in our school grounds and children enjoyed the blossom and looking at daffodils grow, bloom and decay in our garden. They enjoyed planting a variety of seeds and seed potatoes in our planters. They are busy watering them and looking for signs of growth. We spent time learning about seasons and children enjoyed making ‘season sticks’ when they wound wool of seasonal colours around sticks they had collected in our garden.

Nursery children and staff were delighted to welcome a train driver to nursery. The children have been learning “The Train Ride” story by June Crebbin. They listened carefully and looked at pictures of different trains, the train depot and the clothes and equipment worn by the drivers. They really enjoyed watching a video taken from the driver’s seat and loved it when the train went through a tunnel! Everyone enjoyed having their own train ticket, which the children enjoyed using on our role-play train in nursery.

Our talk for writing book this half term is the traditional tale of The Little Red Hen. Children in nursery have enjoyed a range of learning experiences around farm animals, playing farm games together, exploring flour and making their own play dough and bread rolls. They have enjoyed nature walks on our school field and have collected leaves for printing in autumn colours and leaf threading. We have been planting bulbs in our garden and nursery families and staff enjoyed an autumn walk together one Saturday morning in Cherry Hinton Hall park. The children enjoyed collecting leaves, climbing on logs and spending time together in the play park.

Our term finished with our Christmas celebration. The children learnt songs and poems to share with families. They made apple muffins to share and they were busy making cards and decorations to take home for the holidays. Santa’s Grotto and our nursery party provided a very exciting end to our term!

Our new nursery children have settled in well. They are becoming familiar with our nursery routine and starting to make new friends. The children have enjoyed the warm weather and have been spending a lot of time outdoors in our nursery garden. They have enjoyed bikes, water play, building in our loose parts play area and cooking and creating in our mud kitchen.

Our “Talk for writing” book this half term has been “Dear Zoo” by Rod Campbell. The children have enjoyed learning the story and learning about different animals. We have been talking about sizes and measuring each other. We have enjoyed a range of pet and animal stories and the children have enjoyed our deconstructed role play vets and small world animal play.

We are delighted that everyone has settled so well.
