Growth Mindset

At the Queens’ Federation we aim to foster ‘Learning for Life’, providing a curriculum that inspires a lifelong love of learning and equips our pupils with the key knowledge and understanding, skills and personal qualities they will need to thrive in a rapidly changing world. As part of this we are committed to developing a growth mindset in all members of the school community and encouraging learning behaviours that support this.

A growth mindset says:

  • I love a challenge
  • I can always improve
  • When I’m frustrated, I persevere
  • My effort and attitude determine my success
  • Mistakes help me learn
  • There’s no time to lose
  • It’s time to try a new strategy
  • Only my best is good enough
  • I can learn from others
  • Together we will succeed

Learning Behaviours to nurture and develop a growth mindset in EYFS, KS1 and KS2

  • Challenge yourself
  • Perseverance
  • Focus and Concentration
  • Working Together

These learning behaviours are displayed in each classroom and celebrated weekly through one or two children receiving a certificate in class, linked to one of the learning behaviours. This is then recorded on a class display so the children can remember what they have achieved.

Weekly class council meetings focus on particular themes (e.g. trust, friendship, perseverance), which are linked to the learning behaviours where possible. Class councils then share their discussions with the whole-school in half-termly assemblies. By Year 6, we would expect children to understand these behaviours fully and be able to explain why they are important.
